"Evidently, there's no such thing as 'meaning' in this world. But that in itself is beautiful, right?"
— Filicia
Overview[]
Filicia Heidemann is one of the main characters of Sora no Woto. She joined the military at a young age and was originally assigned to the 1147th platoon. During fighting that took place roughly 3 years before the story, she lost all of the members of her then platoon at the Binnenland front during the Battle of Vingt-et-un. Later she was assigned commander of the 1121st platoon and stationed in Seize.
Despite the break Filicia was able to take from active combat, she never fully recovered from the psychological impact of being the only survivor. She still suffers from PTSD years later, inlcuding flashbacks and visions. Coinciding with that, as the only survivor she questioned the meaning of life and for what purpose they fight.
Appearance[]
Aged 18 and 171cm tall (=5'3), Filicia is both the oldest and tallest member of the platoon. She has long, blonde hair and blue eyes, as well as glasses.
Personality[]
Having experienced the horrors of war first-hand, Filicia's main goal is to keep the others from having to go through the same. Thus, she is quite protective and caring towards all of the other platoon members. Because of their remote location, she can be extremely lax on military regulations and treats them more like family than comrades.
Since they are the oldest and have known each other for longer than all of the others, she is especially close with Rio. Together they function as almost motherly figures for the younger members of the platoon, who look up to them. Knowing of Noël's and Kureha's past, she takes special care of them and frequently forgives them their mistakes. That said, Filicia always keeps a calm and professional attitude when necessary, acutely aware of her responsibility.
Speculation[]
After all members of the 1147th platoon but Filicia died in combat, she wandered the battlefield in a state of shock while also wounded and bleeding. She then came across the corpse of an old era soldier and spoke with him. However, it is unknown whether she was hallucinating or actually talking with his ghost. Although it is highly likely that she was hallucinating, which would coincide with the PTSD she developed and the general state of shock she was in.
When Rio returns to the platoon at the end of episode 12 she addresses Filicia as commander. So she was probably promoted because of her actions during the previous crisis.
